Bird Island

The British Antarctic Survey research at Bird Island focuses on long-term monitoring of seabird and seal population dynamics, feeding ecology and reproductive performance. Zoological assistants collect data to detect trends in population numbers, mating partners, breeding success, diet quality and quantity, and seasonal feeding grounds.

Much of this data is provided to Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) Ecosystem Monitoring Programme that contributes to development of conservation policy and management practices that protect Southern Ocean biodiversity.
