1. Carpenter

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the build team for the austral summer as a Carpenter, working in South Georgia. The appointment is from October 2024 to March 2025.

We are looking for an exceptional individual to join our team on a short-term basis to assist with the smooth running of this globally significant territory. Based on South Georgia, you will be delivering Government operations as part of a mixed discipline on-site team. Travel to the Falkland Islands, where appropriate, and travel between the Falklands and South Georgia, as well as accommodation and subsistence for the period of the contract will be provided by the Government. Preference will be given to candidates who live in the Falkland Islands.

We are looking for an individual who:

  • Is self-motivated with an ability to problem-solve.
  • Is comfortable working in a remote location.
  • Is able to repair and maintain interior and exterior of modern building and heritage mixed use buildings.
  • Manages and prioritises own workload in order to complete repairs in a timely manner and in accordance with given timescales.
  • Carries out planned preventative building maintenance in line with set programme of works.
  • Follows established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean environment, including on-site hazard identification.
  • Is confident in making decisions on the ground without immediate supervision.
  • Undertakes duties at the research station to assist the general running of the base, and playing an active role in domestic support, such as but not limited to cooking, and waste management.

The Terms:
Start Date: October 2024 – dependent upon ship schedules
On rotation: 5-6 months on South Georgia, returning March/April 2025
Pay: Carpenter: 45hrs/wk @ £18.00 – 21.00/hr

2. General Hand

3. Post Officers

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the team for the 2024-25 austral summer as Post Officer, working at South Georgia, running one of the most southerly Post Offices in the world.

The Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands runs a highly successful Post Office and shop in the old whaling station of Grytviken, South Georgia. Welcoming over 14,000 visitors from across the world who visit the Territory on cruise ships, yachts and research vessels, the Post Officer represents the Government to a wide range of visitors.

This role requires an individual who has exceptional customer service skills, and who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. Detail orientated, you will be responsible, self-motivated, and conscientious, with an ability to work independently and as part of a small team.

We require two Post Officers in place for the austral summer, from Sept 2024 to March 2025 (with a potential to extend into April).

Due to the requirement to work on South Georgia, successful completion of a medical screening process is a prerequisite for appointment.

Requirements:

  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Proven retail experience (not essential).
  • Experience using Point of Sale (POS) software (not essential).
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Confident communicator.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Responsible, self-motivated, and conscientious, with an ability to work independently and as part of a small team.
  • Numerate and competent in the use of standard IT packages including Word and Excel
  • Able to maintain accurate and timely records.

Closing Date: Friday 12th July 2024, with interviews the week commencing 22nd July 2024.
